Although it's been said many times, many ways...

Everything is suddenly awash in red and green.

Thanksgiving flew by at lightening speed, and December followed so quickly that I didn't even see it arrive until my Outlook calendar automatically changed month views. There were a few brief days when I felt completely overwhelmed by the holiday event schedule I had created, the shopping not yet completed, the cards waiting to be addressed, the party we decided to host. But after a few days of planning and tackling small tasks, I had sidled back up to my old buddy Kris Kringle was ready to make nice.

This weekend was a flurry of decorating and baking. Usually, I'm a little restrained in both pursuits. My holiday decorations consist of a tree and a few random tchotchkes for the exposed surfaces in our living areas. My baking is limited to what I'm required to bring to potluck events.

This year, we found the most spectacular tree and pine garland at a new neighborhood garden center. I trimmed the tree to holiday tunes while my daughter napped, and when she woke up and saw the fully bedecked spruce in our living room, her eyes and smile twinkled like Christmas lights. I decorated our front porch with the pine garland and some leftover red wooden beads. I made a centerpiece from glass ornaments and holly cuttings. I made an Advent wreath with boxwood and a floral foam mold.

And the baking! For the first time in my life, I baked Christmas cookies: black forest cookies and cream cheese/walnut cookies. Tonight, it's peppermint meringues. Plus, my husband and I plan to make pizelles and decorate sugar cookies. I bought decorative tins and filled them with goodies.

I've also spent hours at the piano, learning new holiday tunes ("It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas") and brushing up on old ones ("Winter Wonderland," "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire"). I am so pleased to be able to play the Charlie Brown Christmas theme.

My life is nearly like a picture print from Currier and Ives. And I love every minute of it.
